Meeting evolving operational demands

Modernising the frigates has become imperative due to ageing systems and evolving operational demands. As naval missions grow increasingly complex and technologically advanced, the frigates will be upgraded with state-of-the-art systems to ensure the Indonesian fleet remains among the most capable in the region. PT Len Industri serves as the Mission System Integrator for the modernisation programme, coordinating the integration of advanced mission capabilities. Thales Netherlands acts as the Combat System Integrator and supplies most of the new mission systems. Nevesbu is responsible for the Platform System Integration, a complex task requiring exceptional technical precision and interdisciplinary expertise.

Building on proven solutions

The modernisation is being executed in phases. Work on the first frigate, KRI Usman Harun, is currently underway. Nevesbu also carried out the Platform Systems Integration engineering for this vessel and provides yard support during construction. Phase two of this project (modernisation of KRI Bung Tomo and KRI John Lie) builds on the validated engineering and design solutions developed for KRI Usman Harun.

As each vessel is unique, modernisation of KRI Bung Tomo and KRI John Lie starts with detailed onboard surveys to map the as-is situation and identify differences between the vessels. Nevesbu recently presented the preliminary survey results of the KRI Bung Tomo and outlined its approach for the mid-life modernisation of the Bung Tomo class frigates. This approach builds on the agreed solution for the KRI Usman Harun by applying a ’one solution for class’ principle. It’s main purpose is increased ship availability, easier crew training, and improved yard performance.

Balancing complexity

Modernising an existing vessel while preserving its original design philosophy is a complex challenge. It is not simply a matter of replacing one system with another. In some cases, modifications must be made to the platform and its systems to support the new mission capabilities. As the platform systems integration partner, Nevesbu ensures seamless interaction between new and existing components. The challenge lies in delivering a balanced vessel design and safeguarding the ship’s seaworthiness, while navigating the often conflicting demands of technical disciplines and operational requirements.

Enabling future-proof naval capabilities

By modernising the Bung Tomo-class, the Indonesian Navy is not only extending the operational lifespan of its frigates but also strengthening its maritime posture in the region. Nevesbu’s involvement in each project phase positions the company as a trusted knowledge partner. With the next phase now underway, Nevesbu continues to support the Indonesian Navy in delivering advanced vessels that meet the demands of modern naval operations.
