Nevesbu highlights 2024
What a year! From submarine projects in four different countries worldwide to the design & engineering of new surface combatants and advanced floating offshore energy structures. We’ve worked on many challenging projects this year. Projects with which we contribute to safety and energy security worldwide, and of which we are very proud.
Significant milestones this year include the successful delivery of the Offshore Patrol Vessel PNS Hunain to the Navy, securing the project for providing engineering and consultancy services for maintenance of the two submarines of the Royal Malaysian Navy, and securing the contract from Damen Naval for the platform engineering scope of the Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES) frigate for Colombia. We also welcomed many new colleagues this year.
2025 marks a very special milestone for Nevesbu as we celebrate our 90th anniversary – a journey we are incredibly proud of! As we set our course towards the next 90 years of Nevesbu, we’d like to take this moment to wish you happy holidays and a prosperous 2025. Cheers to continued success in the years to come!
Submarine highlights
Nevesbu supports Royal Malaysian Navy with upkeep submarines
Commissioned by the Malaysian company BSES (a subsidiary of Boustead Heavy Industries), Nevesbu provides specialist engineering and consultancy for in-service support and preparation of mid-life upgrade programs of the two Prime Minister-class submarines of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
Mikael Boee recently moved to Malaysia for this project, and says: “In general I find the people here to be very inviting, respectful and dutiful. Therefore, although we are outsiders with numerous cultural differences, there are no issues with breaking bread and sharing a laugh. With respect to the work it is always exciting with new challenges. Nevesbu is no stranger to mid-life upgrades and life extension programs, however we are currently in a different position in a new environment which poses different challenges that we are happy to take on.”

Masterclass submarine design
In October, Nevesbu organised a Masterclass Submarine Design in Malaysia. Alvin was one of the participants, and said: “A week well-spent masterclass delving into the world of submarine design. Grateful for the opportunity to learn from Nevesbu experts in the field!”
Engineering for the Spanish S-80 Plus submarine class
Nevesbu currently supports submarine newbuild and upkeep projects in four countries worldwide. One of these projects involves delivering critical engineering for the Spanish S-80 Plus submarine class. Alessandro Zambon, PhD and Pieter Nobel are both involved in this project and say: “Working on propulsion systems of submarines makes an engineer understand the importance of precision and how harmonically many different parts must be integrated with each other. Nevesbu had the opportunity to work on the propulsion shaftline. Seeing the submarine finally taking the sea was definitely exciting!”
Engineering to keep the Walrus-class submarines safely in service
Nevesbu designs submarines since 1935. Ever since, we have contributed to, amongst others, all Dutch submarines. The Netherlands Ministry of Defence has taken measures to ensure that the current Walrus-class submarines can safely and efficiently remain in service until the mid-2030s. As part of the original Walrus class design team, Nevesbu still supports the Royal Netherlands Navy with the upkeep of this excellent class of submarines.
Target Echo Strength Materials
The holy grail is for a submarine to be completely silent and untraceable. This will never be entirely possible because a submarine needs displacement, machines, and pumps to operate, but we can get as close as we can. Nevesbu provides engineering to make sure submarines remain undetected by integrating Target Echo Strength Materials.
Naval vessel highlights
Successful delivery Offshore Patrol Vessel PNS Hunain
This year, the Pakistan Navy has welcomed its latest vessel into active service at the Port of Constanta. The vessel is an Offshore Patrol Vessel built at Damen Shipyards Galati and named PNS Hunain. Nevesbu is proud to have performed the basic engineering, supervised the detail engineering and provided yard support for this new, advanced offshore patrol vessel. Sven Los was Nevesbu’s project manager for this project, and says: “It was great to see the ship we worked on for months really come to life and to see the happy faces of the navy personnel. The client is very satisfied, which is something everyone involved can be proud of!”
Delivery of a new OPV to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA)
This year, the first of three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) of the Tun Fatimah Class, was delivered to the MMEA. The OPVs are being built at the THHE yard in Malaysia. Nevesbu provided project management consultancy support to ensure successful completion of the construction of the OPVs.
Nevesbu and PT Len Industri (Persero) sign MoU
Nevesbu is proud to have signed a MoU with PT Len Industri (Persero) (Official) for knowledge development. With this MoU, Nevesbu and PT Len Industri (Persero) are entering into a long-term partnership for the platform system integration of mission systems on submarines and naval vessels of the Indonesian navy for modifications and newbuild programs.
Platform engineering Plataforma Estratégica de superficie (PES) frigate for Colombia
Nevesbu is proud to announce that is has been awarded a contract by Damen Naval for the platform engineering scope of the Plataforma Estratégica de superficie (PES) frigate for Colombia. This scope includes both basic engineering and detailed engineering. The first PES frigate, set for delivery in 2030, represents a major milestone for Colombian shipbuilding.
Feasibility study Unmanned Dipping Sonar Boat
Feasibility study Unmanned Dipping Sonar Boat
Commissioned by Commando Materieel en IT (COMMIT), Nevesbu conducted a feasibility study on integrating an Unmanned Dipping Sonar Boat (UDSB) on the future Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy. We are proud to have officially handed over the report of this study to COMMIT.
Modernisation Bung Tomo class frigates
Following modernisation works for the KRI Usman Harun frigate, Nevesbu signed the contract for modernisation of its sister vessels; the KRI Bung Tomo and KRI John Lie. Nevesbu is responsible for the complex engineering work to integrate all new mission systems into the vessels and will provide yard support during construction.
Yard support main gun integration HNLMS Evertsen
At this moment, construction works to integrate the new 127mm main gun on the HNLMS Evertsen are in full swing. Nevesbu performed the engineering to integrate the new main gun and made the design of the new layout of the ammunition room and the new auxiliary equipment to ensure ammunition handling can be carried out in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation. This year, Nevesbu also provided yard support.
Floating offshore energy highlights
Floating offshore substation concept development
Nevesbu, together with Iv, made a concept design of a floating offshore substation. The concept is developed for transforming 1.4 to 2.0 Gigawatt of power, with a DC export link of 300 to 525kV. When the platform is installed at sea, it will be held in position with the help of so-called ‘tendons’ that are vertically anchored to the seabed, which restricts the vertical motions and accelerations. Last year, Nevesbu has tested the floating concept with different configurations of our patented cable guide system in model scale. Based on the results of this successful testing campaign, we further matured our design solution this year.
Floating solutions to meet world’s ever-growing energy demands
The ocean plays a crucial role in meeting the world’s ever-growing energy demands. Energy is a fundamental necessity for society, but its supply is not infinite. Securing a reliable energy supply in the future demands highly specialised knowledge and advanced solutions.
To this end, Nevesbu provides engineering and advice for the development of new floating offshore energy vessels and conversion of existing vessels. A current project involves the realisation of a new FPSO for a leading offshore energy contractor. For this FPSO, Nevesbu carries out Finite Element (FE) analyses and works on some major structural integrations of the hull. The hull design of this
FPSO is based on a standard hull type, for the design of which Nevesbu also performed complex calculations.
