To improve the operational safety of its Walrus class submarines, the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) of the Royal Netherlands Navy decided to replace its intercept array sonar and to install a Mine Avoidance Sonar.
Nevesbu was responsible for integrating these new systems in the existing platform. The work included finding suitable locations for the new equipment, designing and calculating the structural modifications and routing all the cabling needed for the new systems.
The structural calculations had to factor in the high water pressures and shock loads to which a submarine can be exposed. Space is limited aboard a submarine so it was a challenge to incorporate the new systems.
