Walrus Hydrostatic Model
Walrus Hydrostatic Model

To improve the operational safety of its Walrus class submarines, the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) of the Royal Netherlands Navy decided to develop a highly detailed stability model by means of PIAS (stability software). This model will enable DMO to perform several safety studies and to equip its submarines with the loading computer software LocoPIAS. As a submarine does not have a typical ship hull form and the watertight compartmentalisation is highly complex, it would be a very labour-intensive exercise to model the vessel directly in PIAS.

Nevesbu modelled the submarine and all its compartments in Rhinoceros and developed programs to export the data from the model to an XML file directly readable into PIAS. This makes the model transparent and easy for DMO to maintained by DMO.

It is also possible with these programs easily to export other ship hulls and compartmentalisations from Rhinoceros to PIAS.
